“In embarking on this project, my primary goal is to synergise my dedication to service with the array of skills and expertise at my disposal, thus facilitating tangible impacts while nurturing a profound sense of fulfillment. My first volunteering experience transpired during my tenure as a UNICEF Student Ambassador for India, a role through which I actively engaged with underserved communities inhabiting slum areas. It was within these environments that I found purpose in imparting knowledge to children and distributing essential resources, igniting a lifelong commitment to service. Presently, as I delve into this project, I find immense reward in the art of storytelling. Through the dissemination of narratives, I hope to cultivate empathy, incite meaningful dialogue, and catalyze positive transformative change, both on an individual and communal level.”

“When I was in high school I started volunteering at Camp Anchor, which is a year-round recreation program for special needs individuals of all ages. This program has provided me with many fond memories and inspired me to want to continue doing volunteer work in college. Visiting Mount Pleasant Home and getting to interact with the residents there has been a truly rewarding experience. Knowing that we are providing the residents with the companionship of another generation is a great feeling, and it is made even greater because as students we too gain companionship as well as insight and a whole other perspective that will serve us in the future. My advice to a new volunteer is to not be afraid to ask questions and to go into the experience with an open mind.”

“I find immense joy and fulfillment in interacting with the elderly. Sharing stories, listening to their life experiences, and learning from their wisdom enriches my life in countless ways. It’s not just about the time spent or the activities we do; it’s about the connections we forge and the mutual enrichment that occurs. Every smile, every shared moment of understanding, reminds me of the power of compassion and the significant impact we can have on each other’s lives. This ongoing experience deepens my resolve to be an active and empathetic participant in my community, striving to make a meaningful difference wherever I am.

“For anyone who is looking to start volunteering but unsure where to begin, I would suggest identifying your interests and values first. Figure out what you’re passionate about and seek organizations that align with those interests. Simply starting would be a good idea, start small by 1 hour a week and if it grows on you you can continue volunteering!”

“If you are considering getting involved with some volunteer work but don’t know how to start, I would like to say consider what causes or issues you are passionate about. Reflect on your skills, hobbies, and interests. Volunteer work is most fulfilling when it aligns with your values and interests.”

KIANA COMPEAU
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned from my volunteer experiences is putting myself in another person’s shoes and getting exposed to a different kind of life with a different mindset from mine. I think it’s easy to get caught up in the routine of my everyday life and not realize just how privileged I am. Volunteering often reminds me to be grateful for the life I have and to practice empathy. It creates connections to people I wouldn’t necessarily encounter otherwise, and I get a variety of perspectives that are different from mine.”

“As you gain more experience working with people, you can even begin to work with larger organizations that have a wider reach and larger impact. Volunteering can be extremely rewarding, especially in my case; meeting older adults who have so much wisdom and experience to share with me and learning how to talk to people of different generations were all such valuable skills and takeaways I have had from the volunteer work I am currently doing.”

“If my actions can make beneficial changes in someone’s life, then it is worth the effort. One person should never bear the community’s burden alone. The connections and friendships I gained while visiting Mount Pleasant Home will forever be cherished. Their friendly attitudes welcomed me to the broader Boston community and provided memories that made my education worthwhile.”
